Shoulder pads are the second most important piece of protective equipment in football after your helmet. The right football shoulder pads protect your shoulders, chest, and back without limiting your ability to throw, catch, block, or tackle. This guide helps European football players choose and size their shoulder pads for the 2026 season.
How Shoulder Pads Work
Modern football shoulder pads use a hard plastic outer shell to distribute impact force across a wider area, combined with foam or air-based cushioning underneath to absorb shock. The design varies by position — skill players need lightweight, flexible pads while linemen need maximum coverage and impact absorption.
Position-Based Shoulder Pad Guide
Skill Position Pads (QB, WR, DB, RB)
Skill players need pads that prioritize mobility, light weight, and arm range of motion. These pads have narrower shoulder caps, shorter front and back plates, and less overall material. The trade-off is slightly less coverage, but for positions where speed and agility matter most, it's the right choice.
Lineman Pads (OL, DL)
Linemen need maximum protection with extended shoulder caps, deeper front plates to protect the sternum, and thicker cushioning throughout. These pads are heavier but provide the coverage needed for constant high-impact collisions.
All-Purpose Pads (LB, TE, FB)
The Xenith Velocity² is the perfect example of an all-purpose pad — it's the lightest pad in the game while providing full coverage and unrivaled range of motion. The injection-molded design conforms to the body, and the robust shock cord system linking the chest plates offers superb flexibility that adjusts with the player's motion.
The Velocity² is our top recommendation for European players, especially for teams that need to outfit multiple positions with one versatile pad model.
How to Size Shoulder Pads
Proper sizing is critical. Pads that are too large shift during play and leave gaps; pads that are too small restrict movement and don't cover enough area.
Step 1: Measure
Stand straight and measure across your shoulders from the tip of one shoulder (the AC joint) to the other. This gives you your shoulder width in inches or centimeters.
Step 2: Match to Size Chart
Each manufacturer has specific size charts. Generally:
- Small: 38-40 cm shoulder width
- Medium: 40-43 cm shoulder width
- Large: 43-46 cm shoulder width
- XL: 46-50 cm shoulder width
Step 3: Fit Check
- The shoulder caps should sit flat and extend just past your shoulder point
- The front plate (sternum flap) should cover your sternum without poking your chin when you look down
- The back plate should cover your shoulder blades
- You should be able to raise your arms fully overhead without the pads riding up excessively
- The neck opening should be comfortable — not too tight, not so loose the pads shift
Girdles: The Lower-Body Companion
Shoulder pads protect your upper body, but don't forget lower-body protection. A football girdle with integrated pads covers your hips, thighs, tailbone, and includes a cup pocket:
- McDavid Rival 5-Piece — Breathable compression with hard-shell anatomically contoured thigh guards. Machine washable.
- McDavid Hex Thudd 5-Piece — Features 9mm Hex Technology that's lightweight, flexible, and adjusts to every movement. Compression technology helps reduce muscle pulls and fatigue.
