Sizing and Fit
Is the SpeedFlex for a specific position?
No, the SpeedFlex is designed for any position on the field. The protection it offers is beneficial for everyone, from quarterbacks to linemen. Customization comes from choosing a position-specific facemask that provides the right balance of vision and protection for your role.
How do I measure my head to find the right SpeedFlex size?
Finding the perfect fit is crucial for safety and performance. Follow these steps:
- Use a soft, flexible measuring tape (like a cloth tailor's tape).
- Wrap the tape around the circumference of your head, about 1 inch above your eyebrows.
- Pull the tape snug but not tight.
- Note the measurement in inches and compare it to the Riddell sizing chart on our product page.
The helmet feels tight. Is that normal?
A new helmet should feel very snug, almost uncomfortably so. It should firmly grip your head without causing a headache or specific pressure points. The padding will break in and mold to your head over the first few practices. Your head should not move or rattle inside the helmet when you shake it.
How do I use the inflatable liners to adjust the fit?
The SpeedFlex features several inflation points (jaw pads, crown, back/side liner) for a customized fit. Use a Riddell helmet pump with a glycerin-moistened needle.
- Put the helmet on.
- Gently insert the needle into the inflation port.
- Add small pumps of air until the pad feels snug and comfortable against your head/face.
- Do not overinflate! This can damage the liners and cause discomfort. The goal is a snug, secure fit, not a rock-hard one.
Safety
Is the SpeedFlex the "safest" helmet?
The Riddell SpeedFlex consistently receives a 5-Star ("Best Available") rating in the Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings, which are the industry standard for independent helmet safety testing.
However, it is crucial to understand that no football helmet is concussion-proof or can prevent all head injuries. The goal of helmets like the SpeedFlex is to reduce the risk and severity of injury by managing impact forces. Proper fit, certified reconditioning, and safe playing techniques are just as important as the helmet itself.
How does the front "flex" panel actually work?
The cutout panel on the forehead is designed to hinge, or flex, upon impact. This movement effectively increases the helmet's energy absorption time, reducing the peak force transferred to the player's head. The facemask and its clips are also designed to flex in unison with the shell.
